To boldly go . . .

I have never considered myself a rabid fan of sci-fi or fantasy. I'm more of a casual fan of some types of those genres. I am venturing into the immortal realm of FanX in Salt Lake City this March. I have purchased a table in the Artist Gallery where I am going to be selling all of my books to as many rabid readers as I can make contact with. Will they join in the Quickstep Universe? Will they start petitions to turn my work into movies and comic books? Will they raise me up onto their shoulders chanting my name? (none of which I have actually spent any real time imagining.)

How did I get myself into this? I saw an ad for FanX on a social media site, and noticed that it was only scheduled for a Friday-Saturday this year. I saw this two day event as a sign that I needed to venture out of my rather limited and safe bubble in Davis County, and ply my wares in a more broad and critical venue.

Although I officially signed up for a booth at FanX a month ago, the reality of my decision has reached out and struck me across the face this past week. I returned home from a full day of dragging children, kicking and screaming, into the trough of mathematical knowledge, to find several boxes stacked on my porch. Somehow the local thieves who usually steal packages from porches managed to restrain themselves from taking a five or ten finger discount. My oldest had already taken the liberty of bringing the smallest of the packages into the house. My wife was mean and didn't let him open something addressed to me. (Thanks babe, I knew you had my back.)

I was shocked and pleased at the same time, having only ordered copies from my publisher four days earlier. The shipment wasn't officially scheduled for delivery for another week. Props to the people at Createspace for a job well done! I have never ordered my books in this quantity before so seeing them all there on my porch caused a strange feeling and an even stranger sound to well up from within me. It was kind of a cross between a nervous giggle and a maniacal cackle. This is really happening!

My boys dutifully helped me haul the boxes inside and I went about counting and sorting them for the upcoming foray into a larger world of epic fandom of which I am not yet even a small part. They were disappointed to see that my latest project, Time Pirates: Adventure in the Pacific, was not included in the shipment. I explained that I still needed to do the final draft including the illustrations, and the cover is yet to be finished. They were not impressed with my apparent lack of diligence at finishing the project.

Other than that, I'm all set to sell all six of my books at FanX next month. If you're going to be there, stop by and say hi or get a group together and lift me onto your shoulders. Just don't chant my name. one syllable names never work very well in chants.

It has been a roller coaster of a summer! I finished Fourth Dimensional, the final book in the Earth Bound series, (for now) I finished the first book in the Time Pirates series, attended two conferences on math/science, one in Arizona and the other in New Jersey, went to Lagoon, (local amusement park) on a season pass several times, spent a week in California on the beach and at Sea World, went camping, and somehow found time to do two farmer's markets selling books and other wares. I met a lot of great people this summer, many who returned to the markets to buy books 2, 3, or 4 because they liked the first one so much. I am so grateful for loyal fans who give me such encouragement! It has been busy around the Lott family this year, but as I always say, better busy than bored. I like how things are progressing with my next project. I am attempting to tackle both, a new teen adventure, and a new Time Pirates adventure at the same time. If I survive, I'll let you know how it goes!

It looks like a charter school in Syracuse, Utah will be having me attend their Literacy Night next month. I'll be selling copies of my books, and talking with the kids about reading and writing stories of their own. In the mean time, I'm teaching math and science to my fourth grade students and trying my best to be a good dad, and husband. Don't forget to like and share the Facebook page for The Quickstep Universe, and give me a review on my books on Good Reads or Amazon.

Things are progressing in the Universe. Book 4, currently titled Earth Bound: Fourth Dimensional, is nearing the halfway point on draft number one. The plot is a lot of fun and I really hope everyone likes it. I am torn between spending time completing it, reviewing the first three books, and looking into future projects. As it sits right now, it looks like the series will end, or at the very least, take a break after this book. I have so many other ideas that beg for my attention. However, I live in the real world, and distractions, work, and parenting responsibilities often take up most of my days.

I wouldn't trade that time with my wife or children for anything, so my writing takes a back seat. I would love to write full time, but it's not in the cards right now. I am a husband first, a dad second, and I wouldn't change that ever! So I write at night, and I try to keep the creative juices flowing even when real-life slows me down.

I will try to keep more current on this blog. I have had technical difficulties with my computer, but now we have a new one that isn't yet corrupted by the anti-technology virus which I emit, cursing all forms of technology and condemning them to purgatory. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it remains free from my poisonous touch, even as I write on its keyboard at this very moment.

As for my aspirations this year, I hope to have Book 4 out by summer, as well as a first book in a new children's series I have mentioned in the past on Facebook. Time Pirates will hopefully debut this summer as well. My own children are particularly excited about this book as I named characters after each of them. I have a very talented former student working on illustrations for each of the chapter headings and the cover. As soon as he is finished, I will be making the final push for publishing on it.

As always, thank you to all of my fans and readers for your support, and keep spreading the word so the Universe can expand!

News from the Universe

A new adventure is taking shape for younger readers. My "Time Pirates" adventure series is nearing its debut. A trio of siblings stumbles upon a group of criminals who have somehow discovered a way to travel back in time to steal treasures from the past. Only the Biggs Bunch can save the day.

In other news, Triple Threat, the third installment of the EarthBound series is off and running.  Get your copies on amazon or from me personally if you live close enough. I plan on having a release party for Time Pirates later this summer. I will keep you posted on updates.

At this special time of year, I am so grateful for all I have been blessed with. Children who inspire me, a loving wife who takes such good care of me, and so many other things that I really don't deserve. Make sure you take time during all of the hullaballoo, to spend a few quiet moments with your family and friends. Everything can change in an instant. Hold tight and cherish the precious moments.

As for book three, I have had some trouble getting things to fall into place for release. I'm tied up with work, (those children aren't going to teach themselves) and everyone's schedules this time of year are just plain crazy! Most of the issues should be sorted out, and I'm hoping to finalize things for the book next week. If all goes well, EarthBound: Triple Threat will hit Amazon before next weekend!

It is such a thrill to release a book! I just need to remember that November and December are much too busy to keep planning for a release during either off those months. I had a great time doing a presentation on creating the universe for a story, for Wilson Elementary in Logan, Utah. The students were great, and the teachers were top notch! I look forward to working with Syracuse Arts Academy in February, and I have a few limited slots available at specific times for the rest of the school year. Contact me on Quickstep Universe's Facebook page if you are interested in hosting an event.

Busy is better than bored

I have been swamped with work and writing this year. I haven't been accomplishing my goals as fast as I'd like, but I am making progress. I still hope to have book three in the Earth Bound series out in time for Christmas, and I am setting a lofty goal for the month of November of selling 100 books.

I'm trying to get in touch with elementary, middle and jr. High schools who would be interested in having me come and do a presentation on writing. I would like to advertise my books at the school and allow students to purchase them from me on the day of the assembly/presentation. I am very open on times for the presentations. I am off track for the entire month of November and the. Again for two weeks in February. Let me know if you have a school in your area that might be interested.

Book three is turning out even better than I expected. New ideas and twists are making me certain that I will be doing a fourth and possibly a fifth. I am working with a couple of people on the manuscript and a few others on the cover. I think it will be amazing! I will post pictures here when things get more finalized.

Finally as if my mind wasn't cluttered enough, I have recently begun kicking around a new idea for a series. It will stay within the scifi realm, but have no connection to Quentin, I think. (With my brain, you never know.) it will not deal with time travel, but I already have the basic plot line for the first book. Now all I need is about two thousand hours to hammer out the details. Piece of cake right?

I have started another blog, in order to share short stories, and blurbs, really whatever comes to mind.  I will be posting a new story there soon. Check it out at randomtalesfromateacher.blogspot.com.

Tuesday, July 1, 2014

I"m a little late, but as promised, below you will find the prologue of book three in the Earth Bound series. I'm having fun writing it, but time constraints and the fact that my kids are just so dang fun to hang out, and play with, are leaving me with less finished of the book than I had planned at this point.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
If you have not yet read Double Danger, (book two) the prologue WILL spoil a few surprises. Even in time travel adventures, you have to go in order to avoid messing with the plot line.
If you have finished book two, enjoy the prologue, and don't forget to review both books on amazon and good reads, and any other site you know of!

Earth Bound: Triple Threat
Prologue:
The stillness of the bitter winter evening was due in part to the fresh layer of newly fallen snow. The silence cut through what was left of the hospital to the ears of the only one around to hear it. Quentin Robinson opened his eyes. He was alive! It came as a shock to him given the circumstances. He could just make out the light as his vision, blurry at first, came back to him. He was partially entombed in concrete.
At first he couldn’t recall where he was, but then the images of what had taken place only hours before came screaming back to him. He remembered lying in his hospital bed, still groggy from the pain medication he’d tried to refuse. He felt something. No, he knew something was about to happen.
There were messages, from auras that were lethally angry, bombarding the telepathic passageways in his brain. As he struggled to make sense of the disturbing images and phrases, one thought came to the forefront of his mind. RUN!
Following instinct, which is the exact message his trainer Edgar had pummeled him with so many times over the months of training in Quickstep time, Quentin slipped out of bed, and weakly made his way over to the closet. Inside, was a thin bathrobe, which he put on slowly, and carefully as every move brought on intense pain in his thigh where that madman, Hone had stabbed him to get his DNA.
He almost fainted from the pain, but remembering Hone, made him remember that he’d kidnapped and taken Brinley with him. Anger arose in him as he pictured the smirk on Hone’s face as the Light Energy took him and his new prisoner to places and times unknown.
The hallway had been dark. There wasn’t even anyone at the Nurse’s station, although Quentin could tell telepathically that the guy on duty that night was checking on another patient three doors down. Quentin heard something going on outside the hospital. He made his way over to a window and gasped. The sky was full of spherical spaceships rapidly descending on Orem.
The Hwanai attack, which Edgar had warned them about, was beginning.
An image burst into his mind. It was from a research paper he had written last fall on the attacks of September 11, 2001. He seemed to remember that a few survivors had been found inside what was left of an elevator shaft.
Go! A voice shouted in his mind. Get to the elevator!
One glance out the window he was at, told him he was on the second floor. He stumbled into the hallway. He felt the cold hospital floor beneath his feet as he scrambled as fast as the screaming pain in his body would allow. When he got to the elevator, he pushed the button to call it to his floor. Then, he found the nearest stairway and practically fell down two flights of stairs to the ground floor. Fighting the urge to slow down to ease the pain, he grabbed a crutch that was leaning on a wheel chair by the elevator door. Using what strength he could muster, he removed the rubber pad from the bottom of the crutch, and began beating the metal edge repeatedly on the ground.
A security guard stepped around the corner from his station down the hall to investigate the noise. That was when it happened. The walls around the guard disappeared along with the man himself. At the same time, an awful sucking sound, accompanied by a loud bang like a huge paper bag had just been popped, caused Quentin to fall to his knees.
Pain ripped through his legs and up into his torso. It was serious, no nonsense pain. The kind that he’d think up a funny description for later, but couldn’t think to do anything but cry when it actually happened. From that position he thrust the semi flattened crutch into the space between the elevator doors. He could only hope that it worked. By some miracle, the doors opened just enough for his fingers to gain purchase on one edge. He forced the door open enough to crawl into the darkness. He fell several feet to the floor of the elevator shaft, crying out when he hit. His arm was underneath him, he wasn’t completely sure he hadn’t broken it.
The terrible sounds were increasing in volume. The sucking sound and the loud banging was near deafening levels. It was as though the entire building was being torn to shreds! The elevator shaft was torn away twenty feet above his head. Pieces of broken concrete showered down on top of him. He was being buried alive! It was terrifying.
Why am I in an elevator shaft? Quentin thought.
At that very instant, he heard a loud crack and the whole wall opposite him fell down toward his crippled body. The terrified teen raised his good arm in a feeble defense and closed his eyes. The impact never came, however. Quentin opened his eyes to see that the falling wall had wedged itself against the wall he was lying next to.
Oh, that’s why.
And the teen finally passed out from the shock and the pain.
-------
Submerged deep in the reservoir, the Suntek avoided the attacking Hwanai warships. Apparently they wanted to keep certain parts of human infrastructure intact. The crew had been restless. No one had eaten or slept, with the exception of Edgar, who had to be tranquilized due to the intense pain he was in. Quentin had messed him up pretty good during their last training exercise. Edgar had pretended to turn violent in hopes of showing Quentin what he could do when he no longer had Edgar to rely on.
What Edgar hadn’t counted on was a crippling blow to his entire midsection delivered telekinetically by Quentin. He was luck he hadn’t been killed.
Alexander was beside himself with grief. He blamed himself for getting Quentin involved. Jacob reminded the nine hundred-year-old that Quentin was the vital key to their success. It would have been impossible to stop the virus the Hwanai had sent if it weren’t for Quentin and Quickstep.
And what good did that do!” Alexander had thundered. “They’re all still just as dead!”
Adam, the pilot, had busied himself altering the frequency of the sensors on his beloved Suntek. He hoped to be able to get an idea of what was going on outside their watery hiding place. It took several hours, but he was finally able to briefly hack into the Hwanai communications.
The team waited impatiently for Skyler to translate. The ship’s automated translation capabilities had been damaged by water getting into the circuits when they sprung a leak after the first hour. Adam felt it was caused by debris hitting the Suntek as it flew through the canyon toward the dam.
They are coordinating attacks simultaneously on all of the continents,” Skyler reported. “They aren’t meeting much resistance. The most time anyone had was fifteen minutes. Communications were blanked out and all nuclear weapons facilities worldwide were neutralized within the first ten minutes. They never even stood a chance. I’m not sure Boke would have fared much better if they had attacked there. They’re unstoppable.”
The last sentence hung in the air and seemed to take the energy out of the crew. They sat in silence for a very long time. Each one was in his or her own thoughts. Finally, O, the newest member of the team suggested that they survey the damage. Skyler checked the communications. There were none. He rewound the recordings to the last communication from the Hwanai. It was a call for retreat back to Hwanan.
Alexander broke his silence. He hadn’t spoken since shouting at Jacob. “Let’s go have a look.”
Adam guided the ship on its ascent. At the surface of the reservoir, the ship paused, gaining energy for a leap to levitated travel. The pilot was in no hurry as he flew down the canyon. No one knew what they were going to find. When at last, the valley came into view, the scene was chillingly peaceful.
It’s like the dawn of creation!” O whispered.
Everything has been completely obliterated,” Sarah gasped.
What kind of weapon can do this sort of thing?” Peter asked.
None that I’m aware of,” Adam said flatly.
Nor I,” Jacob agreed.
Head for the hospital,” Alexander commanded, strain stifled his normally strong voice.
Already headed in that direction,” Adam assured him.
-------
Quentin winced at the numbing pain in his toes. He was freezing. The concrete was wet with slushy snow. Fortunately, he was protected from the elements by the partially collapsed shaft. He could see that the darkening sky was above him, and not the hospital, or any part of it.
Whatever those weapons were, they sure made a mess of things.
Painfully, he rolled onto his side. Favoring his left arm. He sat up and looked down at it. He was able to wiggle the fingers, but not without blinding pain shooting up and down his arm. It was definitely larger than its partner.
Using his good arm, he grabbed some rebar sticking out of the concrete and pulled himself to his cold, bare, feet. He carefully climbed the triangular shelter he’d survived the attack beneath and looked out over what used to be his hometown.
A sick feeling developed in his stomach. He began dry heaving over the side of the rubble. It was gone. The hospital, the junior high across the street, the trees, the houses, everything was gone! A blanket of snow covered flat ground. There was nothing to say there had ever been a city or any kind of civilization in this area ever in the history of the Earth.
They’ve wiped it clean. It’s just what they wanted—a clean slate.
Then he saw it, approaching from the east like a glimmer of hope after the worst possible day. The Suntek, searchlights blazing, made a beeline for him.
As it touched down, Alexander was already descending the still lowering gangplank. The look on his face showed anguish, and relief at the same time.
You’re alive!” he gushed. “My boy, you’re alive! There’s hope.”
Quentin nodded vacantly. There was a cold, dark, fury in his eyes. It caused the old man to falter before stepping forward to embrace his fifteenth great grandson.
Hope,” Quentin mumbled, eventually focusing in on Alexander’s face. “They’ll pay for this; the Hwanai. I will make them pay.”

I would love to hear what you think of the prologue. You can comment here, or on the Quickstep Universe's homepage on Facebook. Positive, negative, neutral, whatever your feelings. I'd love to read them. In the future, I might also be posting about my first attempt at a younger audience. A new adventure in the Quickstep Universe for younger fans is in the works.

Wow how the time flies!

I have been so busy with school and testing that I have seriously neglected this blog, if not the entire Quickstep Universe. The book signings at Barnes and Noble and Hastings were fun, but less productive than I'd like. I have been struggling to get into a groove for writing, but I'm pushing forward with a few different projects at present.

First, I'm a couple of chapters into book three in the Earth Bound series. It is going places I didn't quite expect, but I can tell it will be the best of the three when it's done. There are new characters, and old ones, and new settings as well as new times that our characters visit. I can't tell you how excited I am about this book.

Second, I am several chapters into a new addition to the Quickstep Universe. It will be a kids book targeted for about 3rd to fifth grade readers. Quentin and Jason are not involved in any way. It is a totally new plotline and a new idea for time travel. Preliminary readings for the target age group are being well received and I'll keep you up to date on it. I plan on including a few illustrations in this one, and I'm very excited to begin work with my illustrator on this very soon.

Third, I am planning revisions for my original Quickstep storyline. This is Quentin's best friend, Jason MacKenzie's adventure. It will be for an LDS audience. The story should appeal to just about anyone who likes my unique twist on the scifi genre, but my LDS readers will probably make stronger connections to the storyline and characters. Quentin is a part of the story, and it takes place a few years before the events of Earth Bound. (Sorry, no aliens this time around)

And finally, I am toying with the idea of putting Not Alone on CD and I'm looking for input on whether this would be something in which people might be interested.  Let me know what you think.

Don't forget to like the Quickstep Universe on Facebook, rate the books on Amazon, and tell your friends about the excitement to be found in the Earth Bound series!

I'm working on book one of the original series I had in mind for the Quickstep Universe. I'll be looking for reviewers interested in reading  and critiquing preliminary chapters. Remember to like Quickstep Universe on Facebook!

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

I had the opportunity to spend some time this weekend planning and plotting my third book in the Earth Bound series. It's shaping up to be the longest book yet, if the length of the outline is any indicator. It's funny how I can never seem to get a story to happen like I planned. Just in writing this outline, I have encountered three distinct plotlines that aren't behaving and trying to write themselves. I won't elaborate here, of course, because that would spoils things, but still. I'm excited about where the story is going, even if it won't listen to my ideas.

I am also revisiting book one on the advice of several people whose opinions I value. I'm trimming a little here, and rewording a little there. The main plot line won't change much, but it should flow a little more smoothly. They are the type of changes a professional editor would probably suggest, I imagine. If the day comes when I can afford one, I'll know I have "made it."

Finally, I have begun a new series for younger readers. It's mostly a gift to my children. A story with their character traits meshed in with the main characters'. When I'm finished with it, I'll publish it myself, like Earth Bound so it will be available, but not wide spread at first. Tell your friends to join the Quickstep Universe! I need to get the word out!

I just got back from Oceanside, CA. It was a great vacation with the family. You may remember that Oceanside is where Quentin and his family go for vacation in Earthbound Not Alone. I chose Oceanside because I had been there years ago with my wife in May. It left such an impression on me that I decided to make it part of my story. I had to guess what things would be like in the winter, not having the money to go there myself for research. It was a pleasant surprise how accurate my description was after several years.

I'm stalling in my writing due to an effort to establish a larger fan base as well as a inundation of work to do at school. Book three is still in the planning stages, and I have a spin-off in mind. I have also toyed with the idea of going forward with my other series either simultaneously or independently before finishing book three. Lots of ideas are flowing through my brain, but there's so little time, and now with my school moving to a year-round schedule, I won't have much of a summer in which to write.

Speaking of summer, I am looking in to getting booths at Heritage Days in Syracuse, and at Oremfest. I'd be interested in hearing about any other ideas for promoting the Quickstep Universe and all of its adventures. Sorry it's been so long since I updated the blog. I'll try to be better at that. Thanks all! Double Danger is getting pretty good reviews from those who've read it. To me it is light years ahead of  Not Alone. It really makes me want to jump into number three so I don't lose momentum. Maybe I'm already too late for that.
More to come!

I'm excited for my next signing at the Layton Barnes and Noble on Saturday December 7th from 1pm to 4pm. There is a big sale going on for teachers that day, and a book fair. It should be a wild ride! I will not have copies of Double Danger yet, but I hope to have a signing for it coming up soon. It is available here on the blog though. Just click on the picture of the book you want to buy. Books make GREAT Christmas gifts! (Was that subtle enough?) I'm working on my next project slowly, due to responsibilities at school. It's shaping up to be for a slightly younger audience. I'm not abandoning Earth Bound. There will be at least one more book, I just have another idea that I want to play with for a little bit.

Double Danger is even more fun than Not Alone was. I hope you enjoy the latest installment from the Quickstep Universe, and that you will introduce your friends to the adventure!

Gearing up for my next two signings. I have official word from the Sugarhouse Barnes and Noble. I am in the store from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. on Saturday November 30. Then, the following week, I'll be at the Layton Barnes and Noble from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. I'll be giving out my new bookmarks at both events promoting the Quickstep Universe!

Keep your eyes peeled for the next installment. Earthbound Double Danger will be making its debut in the next couple of weeks. I'm looking for a place to hold a release event in Utah County. It would probably have to be on a Saturday. Let me know if you have any ideas!

Thursday, October 17, 2013

I think my least favorite part of writing is the editing. It's important, I know, but sometimes I wish I could just do it right the first time so when I'm finished with my story, I can just publish it. Alas, I have to admit that I have had some great ideas come to me while I was editing. I am putting the finishing touches on my second book. I have a fantastic cover, but I am still wondering about the subtitle. I am thinking of changing it to Double Danger. Let me know what you think.

I spoke with someone at the Sugarhouse Barnes and Noble today. The decision maker was not in at the time I called, but they took down my info and said they would pass it on. It would be great to have a signing in SLC! Keep your fingers crossed!

Remember, my next signing is on December 7th at the Layton Barnes and Noble. Watch out for my second book coming soon!

Monday, September 30, 2013

Great news quickstep friends, book two of my Earthbound series is nearing completion! I have a working cover put together, thanks to my brilliant designer, Misty Choate, and I have people picking their way through the manuscript as I am writing this, helping me get things ready for release. I'm not sure if I can get it into stores by Christmas, but it should be available at my Estore, which you can visit by clicking on the image of the book here on the blog, and on Amazon within the next couple of weeks! I'm thinking of changing the subtitle of this book. Let me know what you think about Double Danger, Twice the Trouble, or any other thoughts.
Here is the cover as it sits today.

As always, thanks to the readers who have already joined the Quickstep Universe!

Making Progress

I have been swamped since school started which is exactly why I wanted to finish the rough draft of book two before school began. I came close. Just the other night I was up until one in the morning binging my way through another chapter. Things are coming together nicely. I have people proofing what I have completed, and I have already sent in my ideas and some Picts to my cover designer. It's a whirlwind of a hobby right now. I am looking forward to another signing at the Layton Barnes and Noble on Dec. 7th at 1:00.

I met with the manager of my hometown B&N (Orem) and she turned me down flat. She was mildly condescending in her tone as she told me she just couldn't bring my book into the store because it is a print-on-demand book and "that's just not the way we do signings." Oh well, I'll take my business elsewhere.  Check out my Facebook page for Earthbound for more updates! If you liked my book, pleas write a review on good reads, amazon, and anywhere else you can, and point someone else in its general direction. The Facebook page has a link to my eStore just like the blog does. It's a store I set up through my publisher so it's perfectly safe and I make better royalties than I do from amazon.

Stay tuned in for more from the Quickstep Universe!

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

It's a week and a half before my next signing!(Aug. 17th don't forget to come and bring a friend!) I have been working on the second of Quentin's adventures off and on throughout the spring and summer. I am nearing completion. I have to give a shout out to Elaine Francis, and Eric Ashby who are picking their way separately through portions of the book already.

I am attempting to streamline this novel. I was not in the mood to take five years to write this one, like the last one took. I have also begun a draft of the cover. I can't tell you how much fun it is to have an idea, and then see that idea turn out! This second book has been so much fun to write, and I'm excited to get it ready for publishing. Hopefully I will have it out in time for Christmas!

As promised, I am posting a small portion of book two, Earthbound: Twice the Fun. Let me know in the comments or on my facebook page what you think!

It was the twenty-seventh of December—less than a week after the world almost ended. Quentin Robinson and Jason Mackenzie were running a few after-Christmas errands for Jason’s mom. The Robinson family had returned home from their vacation to Oceanside, California on Christmas Eve. It had been a short four days for Quentin, yet it seemed as though a lot had happened.
Jason was riding shotgun, rather than driving because with his broken arm, it was just easier to be the passenger. He had to catch himself all the time as the two boys jabbered back and forth with the usual small talk. Topics ranged from school, to Christmas, to Quentin’s girl problems, to Jason’s lack of the sublime agony that arises from such problems.
It wasn’t easy to stay on mundane topics. Jason, of course, still remembered the events that led to Quentin and the P’yunae foiling the Hwanai plot to kill everyone on Earth. He had so many questions he wanted answers to, yet he knew it would be futile to ask Quentin.
During the day, Quentin lived the normal life he had requested that Alexander and the P’yunae let him have. It was only at night that a high frequency signal, sent from the Suntek reconnected the parts of his brain that contained his secret memories. At the moment, Quentin was talking about his argument with Brinley just before school let out for winter break.
To Jason, it seemed strange to hear his old friend complaining about his latest act of stupidity with regards to Brinley. It wasn’t as though it was the first such happening. Both boys had a knack for saying the wrong things at the wrong time to girls in general. As a result, Jason often felt it best to say nothing at all.
Better to be thought a fool, then open your mouth and remove all doubt.
“What did you say?” Quentin asked.
Jason jumped a little. “I didn’t say anything.”
Jason had forgotten that Alexander said he would be working with Quentin on his aura discernment as part of his training. He had trouble understanding exactly what was meant by ‘aura discernment,’ but he guessed it had something to do with telepathy. Hearing what others were thinking might be a useful skill, but Jason had no doubt he did not want to hear everything the people around him were saying.
The two teenagers finished their business on behalf of Mrs. Mackenzie, and Quentin dropped Jason off in front of his house. Jason turned to go inside when he heard a sound coming from his open garage. He trudged through the remnants of the last snow storm still piled on the side of the driveway. As the inside of the garage fell into view, he was startled to see Quentin standing there just out of sight from the street, grinning widely.
“You just left.”
“Yes, I just left,” Quentin replied. “I remember feeling like there was something you wanted to talk about, but wouldn’t bring up. So I came here to find out why.”
“Can’t you just read my mind and figure it out, or remember what I was thinking while we were in the car together a second ago?”
“Naw, my telepathy isn’t quite as focused when I’m in real time. Alexander says it’s because my conscious mind is in control and tells my subconscious that what it’s trying to do by reading auras isn’t possible. So tell me what’s on your mind, Jase. I have access to all the pieces of my mind at the present, so now’s the best time.”
“Yeah, well,” Jason wasn’t sure how to begin. “We just haven’t had any time to talk since everything happened. I’ve got a thousand questions.”
“I have some time before Edgar is expecting me.”
Jason suggested the two of them go inside to his bedroom so they could talk in relative privacy. Quentin flopped down on the beanbag chair in the corner where he usually sat when he came over, and Jason paced a bit as he tried to decide which question to ask first.
“I did wonder if I was on a hidden camera tv show at first.”
“Really?”
“Yep, until Sarah mentioned time travel, I totally thought I’d see a camera come out at any moment. Even after that I still had doubts until I saw the Suntek.
“Could she read your mind?”
“Not exactly, she can interpret what people are thinking, using energy that we put out.”
“Energy?”
“Yeah, it’s kind of like, when you can tell someone is angry because they are putting out bad vibes, and not because of anything they do or say.”
“Well, I’m not very good at that, but I get what you’re saying.”
“Good, well Sarah, and Alexander too, both have a gift for doing that. I’m still learning, Jacob is okay at it, and Peter’s supposed to be pretty good, but I haven’t seen him do it personally.”
“Crazy,” Jason whispered, then spoke up as he felt his confidence rising. “So, how about the ship? Did you totally freak out when you saw it?”
“Oh man, Jason, it was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. One second I was looking at a vacant lot a few blocks from our condo, and the next, there was this big ship in front of me.”
“What does it look like?”
“It looks like it’s covered in chrome, but it’s lighter and stronger, Skyler says. It’s got at least two levels, and it’s shaped kind of like those flying wing airplanes we saw in that Boeing documentary Mr. Carpenter showed us.”
“How fast did it go?”
“Not sure, but we flew from California to Utah in about fifteen minutes.”
“Dude! No way!”
“I’m serious, Jase. I called you from the ship less than twenty minutes after boarding it in Oceanside.”
“Unreal.” Jason almost didn’t ask the next question, but he really wanted to know the answer. “Do they really look like that or are they using disguises?”
Quentin laughed out loud, but regained his composure quickly. “You know, I really never thought about it that way. I guess that’s a good question because movies always show aliens as bugs or some other kind of strange looking animals. Alexander told me there’s no such thing as unintelligent life evolving into intelligent life on any planet he has ever visited or heard about, and intelligent life always looks pretty much just like us.”
“Huh.”
“Yeah, he said if you think about it, skills like communicating and understanding emotions--especially humor are the fundamental differences between animals and people.”
“I guess that makes sense. I mean, when I tripped and fell, screaming all the way down the stairs a few weeks ago, neither my cat, nor the parakeet did a thing, but my mom about died laughing as soon as she saw I was okay.”
Quentin sobered a bit as he changed the subject. “You want to know about Hone.”
“Dude, you gotta stop doing that!” Jason complained. “It’s freaky to hear your thoughts spoken by someone else.”
“Sorry, Alexander did the same thing to me when we first met. I guess I’ve forgotten how uneasy it made me feel.”
“So what’s he like?” Jason asked referring to Hone. “I know I saw him that day in the bunker, but all I got from that was that he was, you know, creepy.”
“Well, I think you nailed it, Jase. He is creepy. But there’s more to it than that. He’s obsessed. He thinks I will somehow be responsible for saving the Hwanai.” Quentin was usually a truthful boy, but he didn’t feel the need to tell his friend that Hone meant to use his blood to fulfill his own prophecy.
“Grandpa Beck said he thought that Hone was driven crazy by the sheer amount of time-travelling he has been doing.”
Quentin allowed that that was possible. “What he’s doing isn’t like the quickstepping we do. With him, the light energy pulses and twists and turns like you’re on a fast moving carnival ride with a maniac at the controls.”
“Do you think he’ll come back?”
Quentin chewed on the side of his mouth for a second as he considered what he knew about Hone’s threats. “Yeah, Jase, he will. But I’ll be ready for him. That’s partly what Edgar’s training is for.”
Jason asked about every member of the team. Quentin did his best to bring his friend up to speed on who each one was, and what their responsibilities were. He talked about his relation to Alexander and the possibility that he might live to be very old by Earth’s standards because of his P’yunae DNA, if he survived the mission he was working on.
What Quentin didn’t say was how uncertain he still was that he had any real future. There was no doubt about it. Rounding up the Hwanai agents would be the most dangerous thing he could try to do, and with Jason out of commission for several months, there wasn’t anyone else who could do it. P’yunae law was clear about staying out of the way until a suspect was detained by an individual from the planet being attacked. Only after a formal request for the Union to take the suspect into custody, could the P’yunae step in and take control of the situation. Since Quentin was one of four humans on Earth who knew the P’yunae even existed. He was the lucky one by default. Quickstep’s creator, Red Mackenzie was far too old for combat, as was Avery Beck, the only other man on Earth who knew anything about the Quickstep bunker. As seniors in high school, Jason and Quentin were just entering the prime years of their lives. The duties of safeguarding the widows of time had fallen on their shoulders, and Quentin was the only one still in a single piece.
It wouldn’t have mattered. Quentin knew he didn’t want anyone else to get caught up in the chaos that was his newly acquired secret life. He decided that the fewer people who knew about the Hwanai, the better off everyone was.
“One last question, if it’s okay.”
“Sure.”
“What does it feel like when that thing in your head opens up a window?”
Quentin smiled a little. “It tingles a little bit. I can feel it working with my mind. The  scientists who developed it had hundreds of years of experience working with Light Energy as an aid in artificial intelligence. Originally the implant was only intended to assist those with various kinds of brain damage to live a normal life. It was completely by accident that they discovered that it could be used for time travel. And when their world joined the Union twenty years ago, they handed over the technology to the High Council for safe keeping.”
“And the Suntek just happened to have an extra implant for you on board?”
“Jacob told me there is one on every ambassadorial ship for emergencies. Most ambassadors are several hundred years older than Jacob and many suffer strokes and other medical issues while away from their personal physicians. So the Council allows for an exception. Jacob isn’t likely to have such a need, so he willingly gave me his.”
“So it’s like a prosthetic brain?”
“Um, more like a performance enhancer for the brain.”
Quentin stood. Jason rose from his bed and reached out with his good hand. Quentin gave him a high five. They bumped fists twice, and slapped their own chests, their signature since junior high.
“Go get ‘em Big Q.”
“Take care of that arm. I could use your help Jase.”
“Oh I wouldn’t miss it! I’ll talk to Grandpa about maybe logging a little quickstep time myself to try and speed up my recovery.”
“Sounds good, bro, I’ll see you later.”
Quentin concentrated for a moment to find the correct time and place Edgar had designated for training and quickstepped out.
“Oh man I’m glad I’m not him right now!” Jason shuddered at the thought of his friend in mortal combat. He said a silent prayer. Please God, watch out for him!

Thank you to those of you who have expressed interest in my cover contest. Today I have exciting news. Barnes and Noble in Layton, Utah has invited me back for another book signing. They loved my enthusiasm last time and have ordered twice the books for this go around!

Everyone mark your calendars and tell your friends! The date is Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 1pm-4pm at the Barnes and Noble in Layton. Come in and help me celebrate this wonderful experience!

Sorry to my Utah County friends. The summer has been so crazy, I haven't yet been able to get a signing down there. I have emailed the community relations person, but it's an uphill battle for a self-published author. If this second signing goes as well as the first, it might help convince the Orem store to take a chance on a hometown author even if he's self-published.

In other news, I'm about halfway through with book two in the Earthbound series. The story is telling me it needs to deviate from my original intentions a little. Funny how an idea can change itself as you try to express it. Early indications are that I will have a rough draft ready by the time school begins in late August, but who knows?

Oh, Quentin is calling. I left him in a tenuous circumstance. I'd better go work on it with him.

Keep your eyes peeled for a sneak peek at a rough draft of a chapter from book two on the blog. I'd love to get some feedback.

I have had so many people ask about my cover which was designed with help from students and family and perfected by Misty Choate. I have decided to hold a contest to decide what the cover of Earthbound Book two will look like. Remember the cover includes the front and back of the book.

Include the title "Earthbound: Twice the fun" on the cover. If you have more than one idea feel free to send them all! You may send written ideas, scans, or even try your hand at designing it on the computer. To clarify, your specific drawings or ideas will not necessarily appear on the cover. I have a professional who will do the actual design using ideas from the winning entry.

Winners will be chosen from those who enter and will receive a free copy of the book when it is published. They will also be recognized on the acknowledgements page of the book. I can't wait to see all of the wonderful ideas. Please send entries to quickstepuniverse@gmail.com

Thanks,
John A. Lott
